What Are Best Retirement Goals To Achieve

Short story

A 62 year old mother was rushed to a hospital because of heart attack.  The nurse attendant asked Mary some basic information about the illness history of her mother. Moreover, medical insurance coverage was also requested for the confinement of the patient.  Then, Mary replied “she has no medical insurance and no pension either”.  Later on, the doctor approached them, “your mother is still unconscious. She is now transferred to the Intensive Care Unit and needs immediate by-pass heart operation”.  Upon learning that, Mary feels stiffed and asked herself where she will a get a big sum of money? 

Old folks to have fun

The story above is not only of Mary’s but this is a story of everyone when retirement is not planned.  While Mary is working hard to feed her own family, she is also extending financial assistance to her mother. 

In the streets, we can observe that many old folks are seen still working for a living. Supposedly, they must spend the last days of their lives with fun. To add that, they must travel, visit beautiful places, and enjoy being with friends and family.

Don’t you think travelling to other places as one of the retirement goals a good idea?

Get panic

At 40s, my bucket list is filled with retirement goals already. Although it was too early to plan ahead but panic and anxiety had attacked me.  During a job interview, I was asked “what do you seek in a company to work with?  I replied, “I work with all my heart, dedication and integrity, I am searching the one that can provide my retirement security.”  It is not necessarily all of the retirement goals shall be provided. But at least, to have a decent salary, so I can achieve them on my own.

Retirement Goals

I have listed below my retirement goals in two parts. The first part are achieved already. While the second part are still work in progress.

Goals Achieved

House and lot (with beautiful garden)

Home is the safest place to stay.  After combating outside for a living, we all go home to rest to our dwelling place.  A place to shelter us from heat and cold, and from any other unsafe forces. 

My 15 years of marriage was spent at rented houses. We moved from one house to another every time I transferred to a new employer. While the house just near from work, I can check and monitor my daughter at all times.  

Renting a house has a lot of restrictions, you can not do whatever you want. Like installing a decorations, hanging frames, and etc.  My love for plants was set aside, tilling a garden that I do not own is a waste of time. 

The house and lot investment is wiser than renting a house. There are real estate developers who are extending instalment plans, it can be thru bank financing or government institutions program.  But we did not resort to this because we wanted to build our own house to save on cost.  Thereby, we purchased the land first and saved an amount later for the construction of the house. 

Why beautiful garden is included? Of course, we all have the time to spend at home the moment we are retired.  Gardening is a lovely alternative to be occupied when no longer at work.  More so, you can create a spot in the garden for serenity, meditation and peace of mind.

Social security or pension plan

Not all companies have retirement plan benefits for their employees. But you can personally get a pension plan insurance in your own.  Depending on your choice, be an annual amortization, quarterly or monthly for a period of time. When maturity period comes, a certain amount of money shall be paid to you according to the plan of your choice.  Though, the monthly pension is not that big but it can help as an addition to your business or passive income.

Service vehicle

Cars, SUVs or any vehicles are very useful for convenience and mobility.  When the vehicles start to malfunction, these entail to constant visits to repair shops.  To avoid this, we usually change cars every 5 years to avoid trouble on the road.

Learn Forex trading

If you are a risk taker, you may engage in Forex trading. Forex is one of the most lucrative business in the world.  The income potential is so high but also has a lot of risk. Thorough knowledge is necessary for you to succeed in this kind of business. 

When I resigned from work in 2017, Forex trading was my income alternative.

Passive income

Passive incomes are those that are generating even when you’re asleep. Having a passive income is so convenient and relaxing, you don’t have to worry your daily necessities and expenses once retired. 

You can start generating your passive income thru affiliate program.  But first your website has attracted traffic already prior to approval of the affiliate marketing program.  Many other passive income generating can be found in the web. While for me, it came from being an IB in forex.

Real estate investments

Real property doubles its value or more over time, my 3700 square meters property bought in 2016 now values at $368,000, it is around 8 times its original value.  The proceeds on this can be used to start up a new business or whatever purpose you may want.

Special courses/acquire new skills

Education is an unending process. In order to be updated with what happening around, I am always reading on the net on any topics that I enjoy a lot.

Staying at home can be more fun because of the new skills learned, at the same time, turned into business. Learning new skills is readily available at the net, sometimes you can get if for free also.

Relationship catch up

I am guilty about this because of my busy job, on special family occasions I used to move the date to a week end so I can attend the event. My family found me adamant to cut short the party for the reason that I need to take a rest so I can have a full energy to work the next day and the rest of the week. 

During college days, we used to conduct high school reunions annually but later on it became once every 3 years or even more when everyone had a career and got married already.

As I have reconnected with them, there is a feeling of vibrancy that made me feel younger again. Reminiscing the past with my old pals is a great start to mend a broken relationships.

Goals to achieve yet

Travels abroad

I have travelled places here in my  own country. Supposedly, 2020 was the beginning of our annual travel abroad. The whole family was so excited when plane tickets were on hand on January 2020 for a Singapore trip on October 16. Unfortunately, pandemic comes in March 2020, so, flights were cancelled.  My family had agreed to set this aside until pandemic crisis is over.

Health care maintenance

Years back this was achieved already but I was scammed by the insurance providers. Extra diligence must be observed the next time I would be engaging into this. From the remaining retirement goals, I think, this must be given an outmost priority since we are not getting any younger.

Death/Funeral preparation

There’s a saying that “death is expensive” and it’s true.  I don’t like to sound like an insensitive morbid but this is a reality in life that everyone must go through. Being prepared to one’s funeral is providing our love ones free from any burdens. Furthermore, peace of mind shall be left to our children not debts. 

When my parents died, funeral expenses were not a concern since everything was taken cared of when they were still alive.  If we do the same, we are also teaching our children to be responsible on their own.

Debt free

Real properties investments, vehicles, insurance, amortization, etc. are usually take years to pay unless you pay it in cash.  To manage a long term investments or debts, take into consideration the number of installment years to be completed prior to your retirement period. 

The service vehicles must be in good condition to carry its purpose of mobility. It is necessary to change units every 5 years to get rid of repairs and maintenance. To avoid having debt when you are retired, an amount must be saved or set aside for this purpose.

Social responsibility

To fully enjoy your retirement days, never stop connecting with people. Another crowd that is so exciting to be with is by attending social gatherings of a noble purpose. It could be a community events, church services, environment advocacy or feeding program and etc.

There is no such thing as permanent in this world, everything we achieved are just temporary. Hence, returning back the blessings is a highest noble thing to do.

Be excited of getting up each day, dress up , go, mingle and give inspiration to others.
