Beautiful Friendship Passed-on To Generation

Beautiful friendship never dies, through the years that have passed it becomes stronger, better, forgiving, compassionate, and more mature. I never recall that there was a misunderstanding between us. This is the kind of relationship that we wanted to pass-on to our next generation.

Children of today

While waiting for our kids doing their own thing, my coffee buddies and I are hanging around at the coffee shop for an afternoon “chit chat”.  There is no concrete topic but anything, whatever randomly comes to our minds.  We don’t even realized how time flies when we are together.

The children’s pastime nowadays are expensive compared to ours.  They are playing at the arcades, roaming around the mall, looking for best location to do their Tik Tok moves.  Moreover, gadgets are so precious to them, purposely for taking pictures, videos, selfies, gaming or browsing. Once, I was wondering what’s this Milktea that they’re so fond of. Oh! it is only a simple mixture of milk and tea but I can not believed its price.     

Reminiscing the past

Back in our childhood days,  I asked, “do you remember Mel on a cool breeze afternoon at the back of our school?”. She was thinking and I continued, “we were laying on the grass, staring at the sky above?” Then she replied, “oh! yes, Aldin was with us too, we were laying on the grass looking at the clouds above us.” She added, “we built the clouds with our wildest imagination”, then we chorused, “the clouds had formed beautifully with our own imagination.” Laughter had echoed at the room. All customers were staring at us, “oops! so sorry”, we apologized.  No single cent was spent for that simple activity but it was a lot of fun.   

Fun activities

Rommel (real name is Mildred) and I both went to the same school from graders, high school to college, almost every day we were together for 14 years.    With our small amount of allowances, we learned how do a recreation on a budget. 

Jamming

When the group was in the mood of singing, a guitar and hands drumming on the desk were all what we needed. Bravo! clap . . . clap . . . clap . . . the whole class turned into a jamming session. There was also this small cassette radio playing our favorite music of 80’s, such as Air supply, Madonna, the musical prostitute-Freddie Mercury of Queen, the king of pop-Michael Jackson, and of course, who would not dance to the famous beat of Footlose by Kenny Loggins.   

Reading

Can you imagine that we can read brand new pocketbooks for free? my bestfriend uttered, “no money? not a problem, let us go to Alemar’s Bookstore and read for free.”

If no classes at school, we hid from the shelves at the nearby bookstore and read any books we fancied of. The last page being read was folded as a mark for continuation thereafter. Both of us love to read pocketbooks, we could spent the whole afternoon at the school lobby or sitting at the grass in the open field, just talking about the stories we had read, articulating every details of it. 

We only buy books when on book-sale, I collected books from Og Mandino, the greatest and bestseller authors of the world. “Do you know Mel how much I got these three Og Mandino books? I exclaimed! I bought these for $1 only.” Mel said, “oh! really, that’s a good deal, I am excited to read that after you.”

Watching movies

Watching a movie every week from our saved allowances was one of our favorite pastimes. We did not crave on lavish snacks, bread or banana cue and water were all good, just to save on money.

First times

We shared many first-time experiences in life, since we were together from grade school.

Dating

Well, no date on a valentine’s day, not a concern for us, because we had each other to accompany. On a cold rainy night of February 14, 1987, Rommel and I were having a candle light dinner at Molave Restaurant.

We were happily engaged to a wonderful conversation, listened to a lovely music,

we’re so in love with that beautiful song. Once in a while we glanced to some of the adorable couples around us, then sighed a little (translating to today’s lingo SANA ALL). It was a lovely evening even sans lovers.

After that dinner date, we walked along the city streets, carrying each a one long-stem red rose as a valentine compliment from the restaurant. We wanted to yell “hey! we came from a date” (simply saying, may boyfriend kami no!), and laughter in the air was heard all over.

That night in my bed, I said to myself, “I will remember this special night forever” then, I slept with a smile on my face.

Car racing

Once there was a volkswagen parked in front of the school, we waited for someone to fetch us. Suddenly, a glamorous woman stepped out from that car, she wore a dark sunglasses, high heels and sexy dress. She was so stunning, “Oh! Marilyn Monroe had came to life”, I imagined, because her profile and curled blonde hair was almost the same like the movie star. Then, Chelle surprised us when she stood up and approached her, she waived her hand and said “let’s go, get in the car”. That woman happened to be her aunt and came to treat us.

We headed to a minus-one bar, over excited to reach the venue, our service vehicles were chasing ahead of one another. We were lucky though that the city policemen before were not as strict as nowadays. It was a little late, the singing competition had started already when we arrived.

Disco and bar hopping

Who would forget our happy memories at the bars and discos, nobody dared to come to that places without money. But not us, two glasses of lady’s drink were enough to stay the whole night. It cost around $2.60, it was expensive for students like us, but that amount was reasonable to party all night long.

Bowling

My Sundays were spent at bowling station, together with Rommel. We were there from breakfast till dinner. I had a bunch of friends that were bowling enthusiasts too. Bowling became my favorite sports that I joined some competitions also.

Separation

I was already working in a company during my junior college while my bestfriend had a multiple side hustles selling anything, like, beauty products, cosmetics and etc.  But when we graduated soon we seldom see each other. Later, I worked as an auditor at a private firm while she has worked at the government military camp in accounting department.  When she got married, the more we lost contact each other .   

Reunion

The high school reunions brought us together. This is what I love most about reunions, old relationships

are being rekindled. Here you will find again your long lost friends. Talking, laughing and remembering the past makes us young once more.

During HCAS high school alumni in 2012, I brought along with me my daughter Oeri, while Rommel was with Jia, both were 6 years old at that time.

While all of us were so engrossed on talking, eating, and dancing, these two little girls were busy playing too and happened to sneak out from our sights. Until my attention was called, “mate, the kids were up on the stage”. Oh my! Jia and Oeri were playing at that area, they grabbed along with balloons and running all over the stage while the program was ongoing. What a shame taking them down all the way : )

The two kids, Jianna and Marjoeri, have developed a good relationship together. Every time we have a reunion, bonding or any event, they too are excitedly joining us.

It was one of the reunions that we started to cultivate a new friendship with other batchmates, the HCAS Batch ’84 Committee. Most specially with the bubbly Vi, who has engaged a deeper relationship with us.

Retirement plan

We intend to treasure that beautiful friendship. As we enter to a new milestone of our lives, it would be healthier for all of us to meet regularly.

The bonding times are not only for fun, as early as now retirement plans are included in the discussion too.

Travel

“Let us all go to travel”, we spoke in unison. Thinking about the places we would like to visit, it gives us more energy to work hard in preparation for that day to come. Of course, we have to take good care of our own health, it would be a long walk to every places we shall visit. A strong muscle and a healthy body is a must.

Business

We discussed about businesses too. We all agree to engage one soon. Mine shall start by September or October of this year.

Everybody needs to move around even when retired, life must go on. The good thing is, it is working with pleasure in a stress-free environment, no pressures at all.

Final thoughts

I met a lot of people in my life and so with Rommel but we know in our hearts what we have is something extra special that nobody can surpass.   That special spot remains through the test of time, amidst adversities. This is the beautiful friendship that we wanted our children to experience and cherish in their lifetime.
