Maids or house helpers are very helpful in our daily lives, they make our lives more comfortable and efficient. While we are busy with our own jobs and or businesses, they are the ones taking care of our homes. However, the moment they left us, we are shattered. In this article, I will sight how I survive when they are not around, the 6 practical adjustment tips when your maid resigns.
What I usually do is categorizing the major and minors tasks.
Major task
The major tasks are those tasks that you do everyday while the minor tasks are those tasks that you can do when you are off from work.
1. Food
We need food, we could not do away with it. Probably food takes a lot of our time everyday, we eat 3 meals a day while others are 5 or more, including snacks.
1.1 Grocery
Prior to going to grocery store, I have to make a meal plan for the whole week and list all the necessary items needed to be purchased. In this way, no more wasting of time going back to buy those neglected ones. I usually do my groceries on a Saturday.
1.2 Cooking
The oven toaster and microwave are 2 helpful equipments in my kitchen. My husband and I do the cooking of a week-meal on a Sunday, usually it composes of around 12 to 14 dishes. These cooked dishes will be divided into 21 microwavable containers. Then labeled with breakfast, lunch and dinner, including the date of consumption. Once the food is cooled down, these shall be arranged inside the freezer. Since the dishes are frozen, it must be thawed hours before reheating, e.g. the food for breakfast must be thawed a night before, and so on.
This is very convenient and saves a lot of time. I am worry free at work because I know my children can manage on their own at the kitchen even the maid is not around.
2. House cleaning
When I get home from the office, I have to do a quick clean-up before dinner time. Making sure that children will do the same with their own rooms. Do not forget to water the plants too.
While washing of dishes after meal is being assigned to the children.
Before going to bed, I have to make a one last tour around the house to check if everything looks good and well arranged.
Minor task
As I have mentioned, that minor tasks are those tasks that you can do on a day off or on a week end. These are the things that you can schedule or set aside from you busy days.
Help from family
Do not burden everything on yourself, you have your family to help you. All you need to do is to explain to them that you have to work hand on hand together. After all, this is just temporary, everything will get back to normal when a maid replacement comes along.
3. Laundry
By Friday, everyone packs his own used clothes, beddings and etc. . I have to collect them to be sent to a nearby laundry shop then get back the fresh clothes by Sunday. Afterwards, everybody must put it back to the closet neatly.
4. Car washing
To save from the cost of car washing, this can be done by our children on week-end. Children love playing with water, aren’t they?
5. Lawn/garden maintenance
Since I love plants, gardening is not a task to me but rather a therapy. Doing this on a day off is something that really refreshes and relaxes my mind. Gardening can be a great boding too with the whole family.
6. Hire from neighborhood
Asking your neighbor to work for you for a day on a week end is a big help. I am doing this for the purpose of general cleaning. Since this is very exhausting, someone to assist me is good enough. This will make the entire house in good shape and ready again for the incoming week.
Final thoughts
Even how busy you are, you need to coordinate your schedules or calendar with your family. So that they won’t feel they are neglected.
One important thing is monitoring the whereabouts of your children. In this case, providing them with phone is essential. You can call them ahead of time if you are fetching them at school, to avoid wasted time of waiting. And vice versa, they can call us anytime if there are some emergencies.
I love to hear your thoughts how you manage your household when maids are not around. Leaving your comment below is very much appreciated. Thank you.
