In our childhood days, we often played games on what the adults were doing. Furthermore, we were dreaming to be like them when we grow up. We even asked for our independence as early as teenage years. Don’t you think giving independence to our children can do better to them?
Childhood dreams
Just like any other child, I dreamed of becoming a princess. With a hair and make-up done, I was dressed in an elegant gown, wore gloves and a crown. I was beaming with beauty and dancing for joy.
I remembered also that I always watched aunt Pilar, my mother’s sister, every time she was dressing up for work. Upon watching her how she painted her face for make-up, it was really amazing in my eyes as a child. Right after she left for work, there I went sat at the dresser, trying all the brushes to touch my little face with colors, lol 馃檪 . Afterwards, I was walking back and forth wearing my aunt’s big high heels and stumbling once in a while. But this never stopped me from wearing that aunt’s shoes. I stood up and walked again.
Struggles
Soon, I realized that life was not all beautiful when reaching adolescence stage. Furthermore, I observed that my parents worked harder to feed the whole family. I felt my mother’s pains and struggles rising up everyday at dawn and went home late in managing our small livelihood business in the market.
Working student
To fulfill my dreams as a career woman, I started to work in a company as a clerk at the age of 18. Work at the office in the morning while studying college at night. My mother decided for me to stay at boarding house at the city. I travelled 31 kilometers everyday from boarding house, work to school and vice versa. For 2 years and a half, I sustained the set-up, I knew then this would be the best only way to alleviate from being poor. I learned to lived on my own, taking care of my finances from the salary I received.
Sweet success
Being independent made me a wiser person. I had learned many things in life, from exploring what was available to solving my own problems encountered because of the wrong choice of decision. This made me became stronger and tough, thought twice or thrice before coming up a final solution. I had even came up my own version of decision making, the plan ABC. The taste of sweet success has made me for what I am today.
Family rule
Since my husband was a working student too during college, this life experience that we want to apply to our children. Now, it became a family rule that children have to look for job at the age of 18 and leave the house to live on their own and become independent.
They are managing their own finances and solely decide on anything they want to spend. Though we never stop reminding them to be extra diligent and being a smart money spender. Nevertheless, we still pay for their school tuition fees, it is on us, as parents’ obligation.

Final thoughts
Giving independence to children can do both, they might become a better person or it could be worst. As long as parents are also there for them to check and guide them. Being independent is a lot of fun and excitement, it opens the doors of all good opportunities, as well as, great temptations to do unbecoming acts. As long as parents were enriching their children with good views in life and inspiring deeds during their formative, then, all is well! However, keep watching them behind their backs.
I love to hear your thoughts on children’s independence, leaving your comment below is very much appreciated. Thank you.
