Breaking the routine from work and breath for a while doubles the efficiency and productivity upon returning to the workplace. The fresh air and beautiful scenery from other places, calms the mind and replenishes body’s energy.
Work perspective
The travel vacation for me is a waste of time and money. Instead, what I really need is only an hour of rest on a day-off. I can not afford to be away from work for a long time because a day of absence means a lot of work piling up on my desk when I come back. More so, an 8- hour of work a day is not sufficient, so, I used to bring work at home also.
Health at risk
For years, my daily routine was work and home, then I started to feel lethargic waking up in the morning. I wanted to just lay in bed, stare the ceiling and wander my thoughts anywhere but it was impossible. Leaving my job was a horrible thing to do, I could not bargain the welfare of the whole family.
You would not believe this, even when I was sick, paper works were sent to home for review and or approval. During meetings or working on deadlines, meals were usually taken for granted, we took food very late. “Can you give me a pain reliever please?” I said to my staff. I suffered from migraine and hyperacidity, as always during long meetings and busy days.
There was a time when I was all alone in the office, then, vertigo had attacked me once again. Suddenly, I felt dizzy then collapsed. A few minutes later, I asked to myself “where am I? what happen? why I’m lying on the floor?”. Then I slowly recalled the scene when I feel dizzy and fighting not to loss my sight and senses.
Work slavery
The work slavery syndrome had sank to my mind too. Oftentimes, I asked myself “am I really a slave of my job that I hang on it.” “Do employers are just exploiting their employees?” My husband even told me that “no matter how much time you spend for your job, that company is not yours and it shall never be yours. You are just a mere employee.”
I started to investigate and learned from co-employees that during their prime times, the company had used them a lot. Apparently, when they became old, sick and could no longer perform efficiently, the company had junked and put them aside. Furthermore, a young and energetic employees instantly replaced the old ones. “Should I allow myself to become one of them?” then, I firmly said, “no, I won’t.”
Realization
“all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
an immortal proverb since 1659
My husband’s words lingered on my head, it was an eye opener for me. I worked hard and spent little time for family. The truth is, nobody comforts us in times of trouble, only our family. One of my co-employees even made a joke about it “work till we break our bones, they will gladly send flowers to our grave.” This was a big knocking realization for me.
Benefits of taking a break
I can feel the real excitement when my children heard me saying “go, pack your things”. They were yelling on top of their lungs “Yehey! we are on vacation.” Our children will surely be so happy and truly love us more.
So what is reaped when taking a break?
Quality time for family
It is best to be away from home when taking a break or vacation because all of your daily routine is changed. No work to think about, no household chores to organize and rush to finish, not so mindful on time that passed. The only focus is yourself and your family.
Break communication gap
On busy days, I do not talk much with my children because I need to concentrate on reports analysis. And I do not want to be disturbed either.
What I love about taking a vacation is that I have all the time to talk and laugh with my family. We can talk everything and anything under the sun. One big leap is that the barrier on communication is very much open.
Self rejuvenation
When I looked at the mirror, it illuminates a refreshed, energized, healed and beautiful human being. Having enough sleep and relaxation truly rejuvenates the body.
Promotes work efficiency
It is so nice to be back to work after having a break. It renews the power and become more resilient to combat stress at work, thereby promoting work efficiency.
Final Thoughts
Breaking our routine once in a while is truly rewarding, it heals our mind and body. While at the same time, we become more closer to our family. After all, we all work really hard for our family.
