Decluttering is really exhausting and consume a lot of time. This is one of the reasons why we tend to procrastinate to declutter our homes. Here, I will give you a simple guide on how to declutter spaces at home or at the workplace.
What is clutter
Clutter is anything that we all keep that does not add value to our life.
“Do not move that thing where it sits from that pile, or else I am lost where to find it”. We tend to leave it that way thinking to have an easy access of everything we need. But in reality, we rarely touch or use that item over that pile. You would not believe either that it has been there for over a year untouched.
Example of clutter
We don’t realize it but we have a lot of clutter accumulated over the years, some of these are: broken items, unfit clothes and shoes, un-match cup and saucers, old newspapers and magazines, teenage love letters, etc. Come to think of it, anything that is everywhere in our place that no longer serves its purpose, these are all considered clutter.
Benefits of decluttering
Since I am a working mom, I need everything to be in order to give my 100% focus at work. I found regular decluttering has benefits and advantageous. While I am at work or off to a vacation, they don’t need to disturb me since they were taught on how to organize their things. They all know where to search for objects that they need.
I have listed below some of the benefits of decluttering:
- saves time and energy when searching for something
- promote good health – keeping from allergy attack caused by accumulated dust from clutter
- fire safety – too much clutter from home or space is prone to accidents and fire hazards
- it gives a fresh feeling of cleanliness
- open up clogged spaces

Storage system solution
To decongest clutter, we need to come up with an effective solution. But what about those items that we can not afford to dispose?
There are some items that are no longer useful but we have a strong attachment to the objects. Consequently, we can not afford to lose or throw them away because of sentimental value the objects represent. Hence, we need to address this kind of concern too.
The simple solution is by adapting a storage system. What are examples of these storage system? We can use the following; boxes, cabinets, drawers, cupboards and etc. Furthermore, you can use anything as long as you can organize them neatly. Most importantly, place the items or objects of same category together and paste a label on it, if necessary.

Decluttering process
1. Define
In every room or space that you work with for decluttering, first is you must define what is the purpose of the room or space. Say, for example you are working on your bedroom, so you must define what is the purpose of the bedroom? Of course, bedroom is for relaxation, sleeping and dressing up, so anything that do not belong here must be taken out. Therefore, a spoon does not belong in the bedroom, this must be in the kitchen. The bedroom is not for eating purposes, so you must take this out and transfer it to the room where it belongs and appropriate.
2. Sort
Now, this is the most exciting part, the segregation. Get four (4) boxes and label each box with “keep”, “donate”, “sell”, “trash”. You may add additional boxes if necessary.
2.1 Keep
The “keep” box is for the cluttered objects that belong to the room or space you are working on.
2.2 Donate
The “donate” box is for the items that you want to give to charities or to any institutions. You can give it also to your friends and family, or whoever you like.
2.3 Sell
The “sell” box is for the items that no longer needed but still in good condition. You can schedule a garage sale for this or thru online selling.
2.4 Trash
The “trash” box is for the items that you do not need and or damaged already. If you don’t want to throw the damaged items and you think that it can be fixed, then you may do so. Furthermore, just add another box and label it as a “fix” box.
3. Contain
Now that you are done with the sorting and segregation, then proceed on the arrangement of items collected in the “keep box”. The items shall be contained in the cabinets, drawers, cupboards or place them on boxes for storage. Then again, put label on the boxes for storage.
4. Dispose
This is an important process in decluttering, the waste disposal. Never neglect this procedure because it will free up more spaces. But be mindful also on the proper disposal of trash. Do not just throw elsewhere but only to the designated areas. At this point in time, you may schedule your donation and selling drive.
5. Maintain
After going through the above mentioned decluttering process, do you think you are done? Exactly, you are right, this is only the beginning. Make decluttering a habit, keep the order of your spaces highly maintained. Get everyone involve in the house to do fixing their own room too. Moreover, teach them to keep the order of maintenance at the common areas.
Final Thoughts
In Feng Shui, decluttering is an important enhancement or cures to address a problem areas. Instantly, a good vibe of energy is being felt after cleaning and decluttering. Because a new and fresh energy flows into the spaces, thus, the feeling of freshness, lightness and happiness.
